Rehabilitation of the Musculoskeletal System After Breast Cancer Treatment
The musculoskeletal system plays a vital role in our health and well-being, enabling movement, work, and daily activities. Breast cancer treatments, especially surgeries like mastectomy (removal of part or all of the breast) or lumpectomy (including removal of lymph nodes), can result in limited mobility, muscle weakness in the upper limb, and pain in the shoulder joint. Additionally, chemotherapy and radiation contribute to reduced physical fitness, damage to soft tissues, lymphatic pathways, and nerve supply in the affected area.
“After breast cancer treatment, patients often complain of shoulder pain and restricted movement of the upper limb due to shortened and weakened muscles. They experience weakness and fatigue. In rehabilitation, we focus not only on the upper limb but also on the muscles and soft tissues of the chest and cervical region. Stress and anxiety stemming from the illness can hinder recovery and cause psychological barriers to physical activity. Fear of recurrence can also negatively impact the restoration of movement in the affected area,” says Dr. Marek Tkáč, MBA, Head of the Rehabilitation Department at AGEL Hospital Bratislava, one of Slovakia's largest centers for robotic rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation after breast cancer treatment at AGEL Hospital Bratislava primarily involves physiotherapy. This includes personalized exercises aimed at improving muscle strength and mobility in the shoulder girdle and correcting muscle imbalances in the chest and neck area. Patients participate in exercises designed to enhance overall fitness and endurance, including aerobic activities to restore physical strength.
The program also includes manual therapy focused on scar treatment and targeted soft tissue and fascia release. This improves blood circulation, promotes nutrient supply to the affected area, and alleviates pain. Psychological support is another essential part of rehabilitation, helping patients manage stress, fear, and negative emotions. The hospital also provides advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and physical activity.
Women who have undergone breast cancer treatment can access rehabilitation through a referral from their surgeon or oncologist after completing acute cancer treatment, or through a general practitioner or other specialist. AGEL Hospital Bratislava offers comprehensive services, including examinations and personalized rehabilitation plans.
“Our goal is to provide patients with complete support during their recovery. We believe that with our expert team and rehabilitation program, they can rediscover the joy of movement and return to everyday life,” adds Dr. Tkáč.
